A lot of times we hear this saying, that the journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step. Truthfully, I’ve usually liked to allow things flow, which meant when I wanted to, I’d go get it. Funny thing was, a lot of times, the desire for certain things were not as strong as I’d convinced myself, so would I be up? Not entirely. This is how my journey with God sometimes felt. If I wanted to pray, sure I would, 5 minutes and I’m out; back to whatever distractions had caught my attention at the moment.
Then one day, something shifted. You know when you wake one day and suddenly, you have a craving for God, so strong, so unwavering, that everything else begins to fade. Yeah, at that point, I’d take the first step and wow, it’s a wonder usually extremely exciting, when you come to Jesus; just as you are.
For the longest time, I held on to that, “just as you are”. In conversation, I had a friend tell me, coming just as you are doesn’t mean remain as you are. And she was right.
Picture this: We’ve heard of the glass with dirty water and if you haven’t, let’s retell it. In my hand, I’d a glass with impurities (anything that doesn’t make the water clear water). Now if you place the glass with dirty water under a running tap, the water spills out and over time, it begins to look clear, impurities all spilled out.
Something that struck me here: 1. The water becomes clear 2. In the process of becoming clear, impurified water spills out
What I’m getting at is, our hearts before truly loving God, remains like the water with impurities. When we speak or make an action, it sometimes comes with a little roughness. Now, the change begins when we get under the running tap, and begin the work of cleansing, from God, our source of clear water. In the process of cleansing, we might still be chipped, and make mistakes, but we don’t give up. The Holy Spirit helps to remain under the running water.
Over time, you look back and you can see a clear distinction of your words and actions and your heart of where you started and where you are now. So “I am convinced and confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will [continue to] perfect and complete it until the day of Christ Jesus [the time of His return].” (Philippians 1:6)
Beautiful, isn’t it? The transformation, so don’t be discouraged, or scared, you are a work in progress and every day, becoming more and more like Christ, who is our clear water. Then He perfects us, and we become that finished work.
